There seems to be no middle ground on 2027 NFL Draft potential first overall pick and Texas quarterback, Arch Manning.

Some stand firm that he is worthy of the hype that he has received since high school, carrying the last name that he does. Others find him completely overrated and feel he wouldn’t be nearly as touted if he did not carry the last name that he does.

Why not throw my opinion into the mix as well?

Entering his second season as the starting quarterback of the Longhorns, the expectations are high for Manning, who currently sits as the consensus QB1 on the early consensus board. While his season started slow in 2025, how did he play down the stretch? And is that play down the stretch more indicative of who he is as a prospect?

Manning suffered a foot injury in November of 2024 on a rushing touchdown against Texas A&M. He played through that foot injury in 2025 before opting for minor surgery on the foot in January of 2026.

In the 2025 Mississippi State game, Manning suffered a concussion. However, he cleared the protocol by the end of the week and did not miss any games for the Longhorns due to the concussion.

There is also a documented shoulder ailment from his outing against Florida, a game where he was sacked seven times. He did not miss any games from this ailment.

Summer scouting has entered offensive tackle week on the Daft on Draft Podcast! In today’s episode, James and I break down the three blindsides who sit atop the early consensus board: LSU’s Jordan Seaton, Texas’s Trevor Goosby, and Iowa’s Trevor Lauck.

As summer scouting has trekked along, my big board has reached nearly 100 names at this point, and more than enough running backs have been watched to stack up who my top ball carriers in the 2027 NFL Draft are in a new positional rankings article.

Will there be a top-five potential back in this year’s class like the past two years with Ashton Jeanty and Jeremiyah Love, or is this just a group of strong, sturdy running backs who will find a role at the NFL level? I’ve enjoyed this class quite a lot, and feel like all 10 mentioned in this rankings piece will find a role at the NFL level.

However, who is the cream at the top of the class, and who rounds out the top-10 as backs who hope to find a role in a committee at the next level?

Let’s dive into the criteria of my grading, the honorable mentions who just missed the cut, my top-10 running backs, and how I have these ball carriers tiered entering the 2026 season.

The Criteria

I break every position down into five key categories (this is not new for those who have been listening to the scouting series of the Daft on Draft Podcast). For running backs, the categories are: ball-carrier vision, elusiveness/creativity, contact balance, explosiveness, and passing-game impact.

Let’s break those down a bit further.

Ball-Carrier Vision

The key trait for a running back: vision.

If a running back is constantly running into the back of their blockers, running with horse blinders on once they get through the first level, or has no patience to feel out backside cuts, then they fall into the dime-a-dozen bucket of ball carrier evaluation.

Not only does a back need patience to let his blockers set up their landmarks, but they have to constantly have the feel to use their lower half to help set up those rush lanes and pull in second-level defenders as well. Backs have to be able to adjust on the fly as well, finding creases when their landmark may have been cratered.

Then when a back gets through the first level, some just put their head down and churn out yards. Others keep their eyes open and continue to seek out creative solutions to finding more green grass. That matters.

Elusiveness/Creativity

A bit of a carryover from the last category, running backs are often asked to create their own positive situations out of absolutely nothing.

How well can a running back make big defensive linemen miss in a phone booth in the backfield? When defenders are closing down on them in the open field, do they have the fluidity and elusiveness to shake them out of their cleats? The explosiveness to potentially even hurdle them?

This creativity to create a situation for oneself is a trait that 2026 NFL Draft third overall pick Jeremiyah Love thrived at during his time at Notre Dame.

Contact Balance

Runners who bring a level of physicality to the football field will have touched the soft spot in my heart. Contact balance is not just running through wimpy tacklers, however. That is just one part of it.

The ability to absorb contact without complete deceleration or the core strength to stay the course despite taking on contact is the bigger part of displaying contact balance, however.

Explosiveness

This trait is threefold when breaking down a running back:

1. The burst and instant acceleration off the back foot when an initial rush lane develops

2. The ability to beat defenders to the edge when he is forced to bounce outside

3. 3. An evident third gear when they get into green grass to pull away from defenders and break away.

Passing-Game Impact

This one is pretty self-explanatory, but is broken down into two parts: ability as a receiver out of the backfield, and the ability to stand in and pass protect your ass off.

As a receiver, is a running back a liability when targeting them? Some backs are not asked to do much more than run checkdowns and the occasional option route, but that’s sometimes by scheme, so you have to project a bit. However, the running backs that can be isolated in the passing game, have touches designated for them, and even show the ability to win down the field stand out here.

In terms of pass protection, I first and foremost look to make sure there is at least an effort. If a running back is willing to at least throw their weight around, I take note of that. Beyond that, however, it’s still important to see a running back not blow assignments, drop their eyes or throw wide hands at pass rushers bearing down on them.

Just missed the cut

Raleek Brown, Texas

Brown is explosive and crafty in the open field. He’s got the potential to be a big-time riser after transferring to Texas. He needs to slow down his process quite a bit first, however, and needs to learn how to pass protect.

Justice Haynes, Georgia Tech

There are just no standout traits to the game of Haynes. He’s just fine.

Tre Wisner, Florida State

While I admire the eyes and vision of the former Texas running back, any ounce of explosiveness in his body looks zapped in a frame that already does not hold up well through contact or in pass protection.

Isaac Brown, Louisville

While Brown has the straight-line explosiveness, he has a negligible impact in the passing game, does not hold up to contact well, and presses a bit too much rather than running with patience and a process.

Last summer, quarterback and former five-star recruit Nico Iamaleava had hype as a first round pick in the NFL Draft. Then the Tennessee fallout happened after a disappointing first year starting with the Volunteers.

He entered the 2025 season with virtually no NFL Draft hype after transferring to UCLA, and after a tumultuous year for the program, resulting in the firing of their head coach, Iamaleava once again finds himself in a new position. This may be his best position yet, as Bob Chesney now takes over after wild success at James Madison.

However, the tape that Iamaleava put out is still the only tape we have to go off of at this point. I’ve watched it, charted every dropback, and written up a full scouting report.

So, where does the former five-star recruit stand now, entering his second season with the Bruins and in his first season under Chesney?

He then took another big hit against Washington once he returned from his concussion and was diagnosed with neck spasms.

Last year, FCS school Stephen F. Austin sent a cornerback to the NFL. Charles Demmings was drafted in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, but the cornerback across from him is even better.

What a great opportunity for a new scouting report.

Jalen Mayo, who started his college career at the Division II level at Virginia Union, transferred to Stephen F. Austin in 2025. Starting across from Demmings for one season, Mayo has now made another leap in competition, transferring from the Jacks to Houston to finish his college career.

And boy, does he bring some big-time talent with him. He already has high grades from scouts around the NFL, so I had to check out the 6-foot-1 cornerback ahead of his only season at the Power Four level.

Will Mayo be drafted higher than Demmings, who received a Senior Bowl invite after his successful 2025 campaign? What does he bring to the field, and how does he project to the NFL Draft and the next level?

We are now two and a half months removed from the 2026 NFL Draft, meaning 2027 NFL Draft summer scouting boards are beginning to be filled out.

Building out the board is not as easy as it sounds logistically, however, as I am just now to a point where I feel like I have a firm top-25. That is because we have been going position-by-position through summer scouting on the Daft on Draft Podcast, and not by consensus order. That means I am trying to fill in the consensus order breaks in time between positions.

We will get to a firm 50, 100, and 150 by the start of the season, but we are taking this process one step at a time right now. My board is currently right around 85 players, with a handful of positions left to cover on the podcast throughout summer scouting.

Does Florida running back have the skillset to be a rare first round pick in the NFL Draft? That is the answer we are seeking to find in this scouting report.

Over the past three drafts, we have seen a total of just four running backs selected in the first round. In an era where positional value is a topic of conversation, and the simplicity of replacing a running back around the league is accentuated, ball carriers are forced to make it difficult for scouts and analysts to poke a hole in their game.

Entering his draft-eligible year after never redshirting and producing from his very first day in Gainesville, Baugh is hoping to take yet another step forward in 2026. In high school, Davis suffered a right labrum injury that required surgery. He then left the Spring game the following year as a freshman at Tennessee after landing on his left shoulder, but fully recovered by the start of fall camp.

Davis suffered an undisclosed upper-body injury in 2025, forcing him to miss four games for the Volunteers. His health in 2026 will be a key element of his 2026 NFL Draft profile; if he can stay healthy, he is in for a big season.

There was no better story in all of college football than Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who came up from the Division II level, took over the starting gig after starting the season as the backup quarterback at Ole Miss, and led them all the way to the College Football Playoff semi-finals.

He was granted another season of eligibility, bypassing the 2026 NFL Draft, and is now looking to run it back with the Rebels. He had some late-season buzz after his playoff run, but opted to run it back instead.

It’s finally time to talk about South Carolina pass rusher Dylan Stewart. After flashing onto the scene as a freshman phenom, he is finally an NFL Draft prospect worthy of your time.

On paper, this year’s pass rusher class looks far better than last year’s, and on tape thus far it is living up to the hype. And Stewart headlines this class in terms of consensus; it is early, but Stewart is the top pass rusher on the consensus board (James Foster).

Former Cincinnati and the short-lived Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is officially seeking entry into the Supplemental Draft.

This comes after a months-long legal battle over his eligibility, blowback across college football, and after the Big 12 ponied up to seek final authority over his eligibility. His eligibility, of course, came into question after it was found that Sorsby had placed numerous bets, including on his own team during his time at Indiana, leading to a stint in a treatment facility and the mess that has been left behind.

Sorsby and Texas Tech finally laid their weapons down and shelved the lawsuits. The battle is over at the college level. Sorsby will now see which team takes a shot at him in the Supplemental Draft. He is a supremely physically gifted thrower and runner in a prototypical NFL quarterback frame; he’s going to have takers.

How the Supplemental Draft works

Brendan Sorsby has completed the first step of the process: he has applied for the Supplemental Draft. The NFL now must approve his application, and if/when they do, this will be the first Supplemental Draft since 2019.

If a team is interested in Sorsby, they will then submit a blind bid to the NFL, wagering a draft pick from the following year’s NFL Draft. So, teams must use their 2027 NFL Draft picks. They can wager any pick they own, whether it is their own pick or a pick acquired in a trade from another team.

Draft order does matter for the Supplemental Draft, but not the same way it does for the actual NFL Draft. Instead, teams are sorted into three tiers: Teams with six or fewer wins, the remaining non-playoff teams, and the 14 teams that made the playoffs.

Those teams in each tier are placed into a lottery. So, if the Browns and Jets both placed an identical bid on Sorsby, being in the same tier, then whoever was given priority within that first tier based on the lottery would acquire Sorsby’s services.

If a team in the first tier and a team in the second tier placed an identical bid, the team in the first tier would get Sorsby. However, if a team in the second tier placed a higher bid on Sorsby than a team in tier one, the team in tier two would get the quarterback.

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers entered last year’s NFL Draft cycle as a QB1 candidate for many, given his immense physical skillset.

He is 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, has a rocket attached to his arm, and has explosive speed as a ball carrier. He is a rare, rare breed at the quarterback position who can turn negative plays into neutrals, and even explosives!

However, Sellers did not take the leap that many imagined he would take in his second season as the starting quarterback for the Gamecocks. South Carolina has since moved on from their previous offensive coordinator and has brought in Kendal Briles to run their offense.

The hope is that ridding Sellers of a far-too-structured offense and bringing in more free-flowing spread approach will take the big man’s game to a new level. Will it work? We’ll have a pretty good answer by the end of October on a quarterback who is still quite young for his graduating class.

So, is there still reason to buy into Sellers as an NFL Draft prospect, or does he enter the 2026 season with a giant red flag waving over his head? Here are my thoughts:

In 2025, Sellers was knocked out of the game against Vanderbilt with a concussion. He was forced to miss the remainder of that game after the targeting call resulted in an ejection of the defensive player, but did not miss any additional time due to the concussion.

Wide receivers are always a stacked position group to work through. You have to watch far more than 10 NFL Draft hopefuls to form a top-10 list. And coming off of a fun class a year ago, a class where six wide receivers went in the first round, we are staring down the barrel of another fun, fun class.

Everybody knows about Jeremiah Smith, who has been the best receiver in college football from the moment he stepped on campus at Ohio State. However, there are loads of names to cover. Narrowing it down to 10 was not an easy task.

Evaluating traits from top-end vertical seperation, to intentionality in route running, to catch comfortability through contact, and more, I have put in a good deal of work through summer scouting to stack up this 2027 NFL Draft crop of wide receivers.

NFL Draft WRs who just missed the top 10

Ryan Coleman-Williams, Alabama

I have a hard time justifying the hype that Ryan Coleman-Williams has received over the past two years, with the lack of play strength and hand volatility that the Alabama receiver has put on tape.

Football is a contact sport, and Coleman-Williams is constantly overwhelmed by that aspect of playing football. He’s a dynamic, smooth mover who is tough to get hands on after the catch, but securing the football and avoiding being rerouted into the sideline are consistent struggles on his tape.

Amare Thomas, Houston

A player who will be a fun YAC receiver to evaluate this year is going to be Amare Thomas. He’s a good, good football player. His skillset in terms of route running and natural seperation is a bit unrefined, however.

The body of work with the football in his hands is undeniable, though. He’s agile, has a dense build to work through contact, and has good breakaway speed once he gets into green grass. Thomas deserves a shoutout here.

T.J. Moore, Clemson

T.J. Moore, a true junior out of Clemson who has started since his true freshman year, is a rock-solid receiver. However, he lacks that defining trait. He’s an average route runner, an average separator on the vertical plane, has average release packages, and has an average ability to track the football.

We’ll see if Moore develops that defining trait in 2026, but right now, there is no real skill that an evaluator can put a gold star next to.

Top-10 WRs through Summer scouting

Texas A&M’s Mario Craver is a ton of fun. However, wide receivers who play predominantly at or behind the line of scrimmage and fall short of the ideal measurements have work to do to break the mold of a gadget receiver.

I do like Craver more than I liked both Zachariah Branch and Antonio Williams last draft cycle, though. Craver’s body of work deep down the field is far steeper than the two 2026 gadget receivers, and his contact balance is extraordinary for his size.

While Craver is listed at just 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, his stride lengths are like those of a gazelle. His catch radius and hand strength are far bigger than his size as well.

However, there are still obvious areas that Craver will be capped out in.

Iowa has pushed out an impressive resume of tight ends into the NFL Draft and onto the next level. They have earned the reputation as TEU, and now, they may just have another one coming through the system ahead of the 2027 NFL Draft in DJ Vonnahme.

A relative unknown for most of the season and a former two-star walk-on who had to fight for a scholarship, Vonnahme finished his 2025 campaign with a strong back-five games after injuries decimated the tight end room at Iowa. Advantage: taken.

Now, entering his Redshirt Sophomore season at just 20 years old, Vonnahme has a chance to prove that his name belongs in the same category as the likes of Clark, Kittle, and Hockenson. Is that leap going to happen in 2027, however, or will Vonnahme find himself playing out his time with the Hawkeyes a bit longer first?

A two-year starter at NC State, ever since his freshman season, Bailey enters the 2027 NFL Draft cycle with a decent amount of hype and recognition among draftniks. He is this week’s quarterback to talk about.

However, we are seeing fewer and fewer underclassmen quarterbacks declare with the growth of NIL. These quarterbacks can go back to school and still lock down financial security without taking the massive risk of leaping to the NFL. It’s why I am skeptical of using too much of my summer scouting time on underclassmen quarterbacks, but Bailey has gathered enough hype for me to pay attention.

Here, I break down his season finale against North Carolina (also his best performance), provide a six-game ball placement and accuracy charting profile, and write up a full scouting report on the Wolfpack gunslinger.

Another week down, another Inside the Film Room out into the universe.

This week, we focus on Texas wide receiver Cam Coleman, who joins forces with Arch Manning in Austin after two seasons at Auburn. He was perhaps the biggest name to enter the transfer portal this past Spring and landed with Texas despite interest from Texas A&M, Florida, and others.

However, where does he stand in what looks to be a strong wide receiver class on paper? Per the consensus board on my podcast co-host James Foster’s site, Coleman is seen as the second-best receiver behind just Jeremiah Smith of Ohio State, and the sixth-best player in the entire draft class.
